The UFC is renowned for being an extremely unpredictable place at times. Over the years, we’ve seen a number of surprising fighters compete for the UFC titles.
By now, everyone is familiar with top UFC title contenders like Weili Zhang and Colby Covington, but could other, lesser-known fighters be looking for a shot at a title in 2022?
The answer is yes. This is not surprising given that the UFC has a roster made up of hundreds of fighters. The point is, a lot of them are going under the radar right now and probably shouldn’t be.
With that in mind, here are five lesser-known fighters who could enter the UFC title race in 2022.
# 5. Casey O’Neill – UFC flyweight contender
The UFC women’s flyweight division is one of the thinnest the promotion has to offer. Apparently, any fighter who can put together a solid winning streak can enter the title race.
There is an obvious reason for this. Reigning UFC flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko is one of the most active defending champions in the promotion. This means that the best candidates are regularly knocked down and the churn to find new ones is apparently still ongoing. That being considered, despite the fact that she is currently unranked, it’s hard to imagine Casey O’Neill failing to have an argument in 2022.
In fact, it would probably be a shock if ‘King Casey’ didn’t watch ‘Bullet’ in a UFC title fight ahead of next year’s release. Put simply, O’Neill is an absolutely fantastic prospect to watch out for. The Scottish-born, Australia-based fighter has excellent skills in all areas and has proven capable of both knocking out and subduing enemies inside the Octagon.
Already 3-0 in the UFC and 8-0 overall, O’Neill is still only 23 years old, which means it’s likely that she hasn’t even hit her sporting peak yet. When you consider the fact that she recently destroyed Antonina Shevchenko, “Bullet’s” sister, the storyline for a possible title shot for “King Casey” is essentially written.
One more win should put O’Neill in the running and might even be enough to get him gold, meaning that flyweight prospect is impossible to ignore.
