Adekuoroye and 2 other Nigerians set to storm Spain for U23 World Wrestling Championship

Three Nigerians – Christianah Ogunsanya, Mercy Adekuoroye and Esther Kolawole have been listed by the United World Wrestling (UWW) U-23 World Championship which is taking place in Spain.

The competition takes place specifically in the eastern coastal town of Pontevedra between October 17 and 23, 2022.

Being the last world championship of the season, the field of competitors consists of 15 world championships at the senior level including eight senior world champions.

Ogunsanya, the Africa Youth Champion, will face some of the best 50kg fighters, while Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Kolawole will be aiming for a podium finish in the 57kg.

Adekuoroye, brother of the two-time world championship medalist, hopes to emulate his sister when she competes at 55kg.

Additionally, Japan is sending a strong female contingent led by Olympic and World Champion Yui Susaki as well as young wonderkid Akari Fujinami, Nonoka Ozaki and Miwa Morikawa.

American Amit Elor, recently crowned world champion in Belgrade, will be aiming for her third world title of the year after having already won the U20 and senior titles.

The freestyle competition will see strong teams entered by the United States, Iran, India, Armenia, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan.
