Paige VanZant’s last name may sound Dutch, but she was not born under the name VanZant. Her birth name was completely different and she legally changed it due to excessive bullying in high school.

Paige’s real last name was Sletten. When she was in high school, her classmates made fun of her because other students called her “Slutton”. Therefore, she legally changed it to VanZant, which was the last name of her mother’s student. Plus, bullying was actually the main reason she decided to become a fighter.

UFC legend Ken Shamrock spotted VanZant and then she started training in MMA. She made her debut at the age of 18 in 2012. It was arguably the perfect age to start the business, as her body could quickly adapt to the needs of a mixed martial artist.

Paige VanZant is currently married to Austin Vanderford, another MMA and Bellator fighter. The duo started dating in 2017, and they got engaged in January 2018. They tied the knot that same year in September.

VanZant dated former UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt in 2015, but they went their separate ways within a year. She also reportedly dated dancer Alan Bersten when she was on Dancing with the stars.
