Alexander Volkanovski ‘more than OK’ with interim title fight

Featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski doesn’t mind the UFC setting up an interim title.

Although Volkanovski (25-1 MMA, 12-0 UFC) was an active champion, the promotion created an interim title fight after ‘The Great’ decided to move up a division to challenge the heavyweight champion. light Islam Makhachev.

At UFC 284 on February 11 in Perth, Australia, Volkanovski will pursue double champion status when he meets Makhachev in the main event. On that same card, Yair Rodriguez (14-3 MMA, 9-2 UFC) and Josh Emmett (18-2 MMA, 9-2 UFC) will square off for the interim 145-pound belt.

“Look, I’m okay with that,” Volkanovski said during the UFC 284 press conference. “At the end of the day, I’m the champion. So that’s it. So that gives me a clear guy. Which card to do it, you know what I mean? They can also show me who’s next in this featherweight division here in Australia. So that builds this fight anyway. But I’m more than okay with that. Right now I want to chase that second belt, so I’m focusing on that.

Volkanovski plans to fight Makhachev and then return to featherweight to defend his title against the winner of Rodriguez and Emmett.

“And then we’ll let them do their thing,” Volkanovski added. “I hope you put on a show, give me a clear guy, and then you know somebody’s holding that interim belt, and I’ll be happy to take them as soon as possible, because I want to be active, you know what I mean? And I don’t want people waiting for me and things like that, although I don’t think they would need it, but I think it’s good. I think it really prepares my next fight at featherweight anyway, so I’m more than ok with that.
