Alexander Volkanovski to defend his title for the third time against former champion, Max Holloway.
A major trilogy fight was announced Thursday as Max Holloway will challenge Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 272. ESPN’s Brett Okamoto broke the news via Twitter early Wednesday night.
“The trilogy is launched. Rounds 11-15 are at UFC 272 on March 5, by Dana White, ”Okamoto said. “Alexander Volkanovski vs. Max Holloway. Two of the best in the world, p4p. Huge stakes. Who do you have?
Volkanovski is leading a 20-game winning streak dating back to December 2013. It was during this run that he won the UFC Featherweight Championship from Holloway, beating him at UFC 245. They would meet again seven months later at the ‘UFC 251 where he’ d clinched a split decision victory to retain the title. Since then, Volkanovski has defended his belt against Brian Ortega at UFC 266, a fight many considered to be Fight Contender of the Year.
Even though Holloway has lost two fights to the current champion, he refuses to leave as he continues to beat all the other men standing in front of him. Since his second loss to Volkanovski, he has beaten both Calin Kattar and Yair Rodriguez in five rounds in 2021.
Volkanovsky vs. Holloway will be a rare MMA trilogy contest
Volkanovsky vs. Holloway III will be one of the few trilogy fights in mixed martial arts. Other times the contestants have faced each other three times including Ken Shamrock v Tito Ortiz, Georges St. Pierre v Matt Hughes and Frankie Edgar v Gray Maynard.
UFC 272 is scheduled for March 5, 2022 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
