Burroughs Wins Historic Title – University of Nebraska

Oslo, Norway – Former Husker wrestler Jordan Burroughs won his fifth world championship by beating Iranian Mohammad Nokhodilarimi, 5-1, in the men’s 79kg freestyle final at the world wrestling championships on Monday. Burroughs tied John Smith’s US freestyle record of six combined world and Olympic championships.

In the 79kg final, Burroughs took a 3-0 lead with a double-leg takedown followed closely by another brace. The victory gave Burroughs his fifth World Championship gold, joining his titles in 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017.

Burroughs faced Canadian Sam Barmish in Game 1 of the tournament and earned a 10-0 win with three double-leg eliminations. In the second round, Burroughs was scheduled to face Kazakh Bolat Sakayev, but he forfeited the next round. In the quarterfinals, Burroughs faced Radik Valiev of the Russian Wrestling Federation. Valiev started strong with a 3-2 lead at the break, but Burroughs rallied for a 9-4 win to advance to the semi-finals.

On Sunday, Burroughs qualified for his fifth World Championship game, outscoring Japan’s Ryuki Yoshida, 10-1.

At 70 kg, his compatriot former Husker James Green claimed his first match victory, beating Korea’s Seungchul Lee by a technical fall of 10-0. Green’s second-round story was similar as he advanced to the quarter-finals with a 10-0 technical fall to Germany’s Shamil Ustaev.

In the quarterfinals, Green lost a fierce match against Azerbaijani Turan Bayramov 6-5 and was eliminated from the competition.

Burroughs’ medal was the second gold of the day for the United States, as former Omaha Skutt and Iowa wrestler Thomas Gilman defeated Iranian Alireza Sarlak in the 57 kg.
