Cassioppi ready to defend his world title in Spain – University of Iowa Athletics



PONTEVEDRA, Spain — University of Iowa senior Tony Cassioppi will compete Saturday and Sunday at the UWW U23 World Championships in Pontevedra, Spain. The 2022 U23 World Championships take place from October 17 to 23 at the Municipal Sports Palace in Pontevedra.

Cassioppi represents the United States men’s freestyle team at 125 kg.

The Roscoe, Illinois native opens the tournament Saturday at 3:30 a.m. (CT) with qualifying rounds, where he will face Israeli Llor Altshuler in his opener. The semifinals are at 9:45 a.m. The repechage begins Sunday at 9 a.m. and the men’s freestyle finals are Sunday at 11 a.m.

Cassioppi earned his spot on World Team USA after coming through the 2022 World Team Trials in June. He went 7-0 and edged his opponents 72-8, including 11-4 and 13-2 wins in the final to claim his second consecutive U23 title.

In Pontevedra, Cassioppi is looking to defend his U23 world title. Last season Cassioppi won gold, winning all four games, including two in the fall, and outscoring his opponent 38-8.
