Chael Sonnen chooses two fighters who can replace Rafael dos Anjos against Islam Makhachev

Chael Sonnen has suggested that Islam Makhachev will likely remain on the UFC 267 fight card despite the removal of his opponent Rafael dos Anjos from the event.

On that note, Sonnen suggested that Islam Makhachev could face Dan Hooker or Beneil Dariush at UFC 267.

“This call is going to someone. I am not telling you that they will just hold back Islam and the GDR and do so at some other time. The only reason I say this – I have no proof – is a geographic statement on my part. Geographically speaking, this part of the world (Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates) wants Islam on the map. This is what I am suggesting. I believe Islam will remain intact. The question becomes – against whom?

In an episode of Beyond the fight, Sonnen indirectly referred to the fact that UFC 267 is scheduled to take place at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Sonnen pointed out that the UFC will ensure that Islam Makhachev fight at UFC 267 because the public in the part of the world – the United Arab Emirates – “wants Islam to be on the map.”

Makhachev enjoys significant fan following in the Islamic MMA community and in the United Arab Emirates, mainly due to his close friendship with the first Muslim UFC champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Chael Sonnen however indicated that Hooker or Dariush being roped up to fight Islam Makhachev is not yet a lock. Sonnen noted that the UFC can select any fighter in the top ten in the UFC lightweight rankings.

Islam Makhachev on the verge of winning UFC title

Islam Makhachev is currently in 5th place in the UFC lightweight rankings. Makhachev is on an eight-game winning streak. The Dagestan MMA mainstay’s most recent fight was a fourth round submission victory over Thiago Moises at the UFC on ESPN: Makhachev vs. Moises in July 2021.

Fans can expect the UFC to announce which fighter Islam Makhachev will face at UFC 267 in the coming days. The pay-per-view will take place on October 30, 2021. The consensus is that a dominant victory over a top 5 or top 10 lightweight at UFC 267 could see Islam Makhachev claim the coveted lightweight title.
