Chael Sonnen Says Khamzat Chimaev’s Performance Against Gilbert Burns ‘Doesn’t Equal Undefeated MMA Record’

Chael Sonnen gave his opinion on Khamzat Chimaev’s war against Gilbert Burns.

In a recent appearance on his podcast, “The American Gangster” suggested the fight was a shootout and that Chimaev’s performance “usually doesn’t equal an undefeated MMA record.”

Sonnen indicated that the undefeated Chimaev essentially got into a risky fight with Burns, a fight that could have gone either way.

Freestyle wrestling scholar Chimaev, who usually outplays and dominates his opponents, was unable to do so against Brazilian multi-world jiu-jitsu champion Burns in their welterweight bout at UFC 273 on April 9. .

Interestingly, the fight was largely fought on the feet and saw Chimaev pick up a unanimous decision win.

Chael Sonnen praised Chimaev for not being discouraged after Burns stuffed most of his takedowns. Sonnen praised ‘Borz’ for adapting to the situation and mixing things up. He also praised the Chechen-born Swede for the intangibles – hinting at the durability and courage shown by the 27-year-old:

“At some point you have to learn – He is ready for this technique. Oh, by the way, I had four fights. I hit the same technique on absolutely everyone, so he had a good idea that was going to happen. Turns out he prepared for it. I have to mix it all up. And that’s what I saw Chimaev do. And yes, it’s a dangerous way to fight, that’s for sure.”

He further added:

“If this is the final analysis on this, I will withdraw and I will completely agree with the coach, with [Georges] St-Pierre, with all the evaluations that are coming. I completely agree. Anyone who gets into a shootout that’s a long-term plan usually doesn’t equal an undefeated MMA record. It’s just who can hit the target first.

In a recent interview with Helen Yee Sports, former UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz offered his advice to Khamzat Chimaev on dealing with his newfound fame:

“I think what’s going to make the big difference for Khamzat is, from here, with all the fame, with all the light, with all the praise, with everyone talking about him, choosing he as chief.”

Cruz warned Khamzat Chimaev that he will have all the “leeches” asking him to coach and train with them. He felt that Chimaev should instead stay with the people who first brought him to where he is.

Currently, the consensus is that “Borz” will likely fight Colby Covington next. However, the match has yet to be officially confirmed.
