Conor McGregor could return to action in the UFC this year, just months after breaking his leg in his loss to Dustin Poirier.
McGregor’s trilogy fight with Poirier, at UFC 264 in July, ended in unsatisfactory circumstances for the Irishman and MMA fans as he broke his leg while kicking his opponent.
The Notorious had to undergo surgery after the fight, his second straight loss this year, both against the Diamond, and it was speculated that he wouldn’t be back in 2021.
However, UFC President Dana White has now provided an update on the promotion’s best-selling star, saying McGregor may be back sooner than expected.
“The question is, when can he start kicking again?
“If he could take kicks, then he would consider a fight again before the end of the year, so it all depends on how quickly that leg heals.”
Leg kicking has certainly been big in both fights between the two this year, with Poirier’s ability to land them in the fight in January being key.
McGregor seemed to have a better defense against them the second time around and took down a few of his own, but he found himself on the ground for much of the fight.
Just at the end of the first lap, after getting to his feet, McGregor came into contact with a leg kick but his leg broke and he fell to the ground as he put weight on it. .
Speaking to Adam Glyn this week, McGregor said he felt like he could start kicking now, “I feel like I can kick now.
“Honestly, I feel like I could kick a kick right now. But I just have to listen to the doctors and listen to the people who have guided me, that’s what I’ve been doing so far.
“I got into the work. I’m back on my feet. It’s so good to be back on my feet.”
The former two-weight champion made headlines this week for his work outside the Octagon, not exactly for the first time, but for his actions at VMAs.
