Conor McGregor to star in ‘Road House’ remake

It’s been almost seven years since the news broke Ronda Rousey would star in a remake of the 1989 cult classic “Road House.”

At the time, Rousey was the UFC women’s bantamweight champion and one of the biggest sports stars in the world. She had three acting roles under her belt – ‘The Expendables 3’, ‘Furious 7’ and ‘Entourage’ – and seemed to be on the cusp of crossover stardom sports in Hollywood.

Rousey was going to play a female version of the character played by Patrick Swayze in the original film, but somewhere along the line, it seems her attachment to image died on the vine. The film as a whole, however, did not.

And now, according to Deadlinethe reboot has been greenlit for Amazon Prime Video and will feature Oscar nominee Jake Gyllenhaal – and former two-division UFC champion Conor McGregor is also on board for a role.

McGregor spokeswoman Karen Kessler released a statement to MMA Junkie who confirmed the crossover star’s involvement.

Conor McGregor is thrilled to expand his career in Hollywood and join Jake Gyllenhaal in this reimagining of a beloved classic ‘Road House,'” Kessler said. “While fighting remains his priority, it’s the start of another successful adventure in the McGregor empire. He can’t wait to begin filming.”

Conor McGregor will play a role in the "Relay" remake.

Gyllenhaal will play “a former UFC fighter who accepts a job as a bouncer at a rugged Florida Keys roadhouse, but soon discovers that all is not what it seems in this tropical paradise.”

Deadline’s report says McGregor won’t be playing himself in the Doug Liman-directed film, whose credits include notable action movies like “The Bourne Identity” with Matt Damon, “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, and “Edge of Tomorrow” and “American Made” with Tom Cruise.

The remake would be filmed in the Dominican Republic, which will double for the Florida Keys. The 1989 version of Swayze is set in Missouri.

Gyllenhaal and Liman have been attached to the “Road House” remake since late 2021. Gyllenhaal was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar in 2006 for “Brokeback Mountain.” He won awards buzz in 2014 for ‘Nightcrawler’ and in 2015 played a boxer in ‘Southpaw’ opposite Forest Whittaker and Rachel McAdams.

McGregor has yet to make the leap to the big screen. He was reportedly set for a role in ‘XxX: The Return of Xander Cage,’ but backed out after losing to Nate Diaz in March 2016. The former UFC lightweight and featherweight champion has only one only win since November 2016 – a January 2020 TKO of Donald Cerrone.

McGregor lost to Khabib Nurmagomedov in October 2018 and was involved in a post-fight melee that suspended both fighters. And in 2021, he lost back-to-back fights to Dustin Poirier by TKO. In the second, He broke his leg and has yet to announce his comeback – although he’s been in the media a lot even without a fight.

As for Rousey, it was never reported that she was officially out of the “Road House” remake, but that’s presumed to be the case. After leaving MMA, Rousey started a family with her husband Travis Browne and is now on the WWE roster.

No release date has been announced, but Deadline’s report says it will stream on Amazon Prime in over 240 countries when released.
