Deiveson Figueiredo thinks Aljamain Sterling will lose his belt

UFC flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo has a rather intriguing prediction for UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling. In a recent appearance on MMA fights Trocação Franca podcastFigueiredo reiterated that he would like to move up to bantamweight eventually.

“Deus da Guerra” claimed that by the time he moved up to bantamweight, Sterling would not be the division champion. Deiveson Figueiredo noted that there are other bantamweights who are better than Sterling.

He felt that fighters like former UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo and former UFC bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw would likely beat Sterling if they received title shots. Figueiredo said:

“I admit, I want to go up to 135… I don’t know when, only God knows. [But] As long as I am successful at 125 and have someone to challenge me, rest assured that I will continue to stand up for what is mine.

“I think it’s only a matter of time before he [Sterling] loses this place… There are guys who are much better than him. If he collides with Jose Aldo, Jose Aldo knocks him out… I watched [Dillashaw] a lot, he is very strategic and smart. When he fights for the belt again, he will regain that title.

Currently, UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling is due to defend his belt against TJ Dillashaw at UFC 280 on October 22. Elsewhere on the UFC 280 card, former UFC bantamweight champion Petr Yan will face Sean O’Malley.

Meanwhile, Jose Aldo is set to face Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 278 on August 20. The consensus is that the winner of the Yan-O’Malley or Aldo-Dvalishvili clash could earn a title shot against the winner of the Sterling-Dillashaw fight.

The bantamweight title fight between Aljamain Sterling and TJ Dillashaw has been rescheduled for October 22 in Abu Dhabi 🗓

Deiveson Figueiredo on his bantamweight plans, possible fight against Aljamain Sterling

UFC flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo has been struggling with hand injury issues since his last fight against Brandon Moreno in January this year.

Meanwhile, the UFC has booked an interim UFC flyweight title match between Brandon Moreno and Kai Kara-France set to take place at UFC 277 on July 30. The winner of the fight will face Figueiredo in a unifying title fight at some point in the future.

On the World of the Luta podcast a few weeks ago, Deiveson Figueiredo pointed out that it was difficult for him to cut flyweight, given that he is almost 35 years old. Noting that he will defend his flyweight title two or three times before moving up to bantamweight, Figueiredo continued to jibe at Aljamain Sterling. Figueiredo said:

“I want to face the champion, Aljamain Sterling. I see fear in his eyes. I know he doesn’t want to face me, and I’m sure we’ll have a great fight and I’ll be the champion when that happens.
