Weight cutting is perennially one of the hottest topics of debate within the MMA community, and ONE World Flyweight Champion Demetrious Johnson has his own opinions.

After battling for multiple promotions at 125 and 135 pounds, he’s seen more than his fair share of weight cuts. In a recent appearance on The Joe Rogan ExperienceJohnson shared some thoughts on how he would like to change the current weight classes:

“It’s not like it’s going to hurt anyone’s brand to add more weight classes. It will give athletes more opportunities to make money in mixed martial arts.”

He added:

“In Singapore, I see the guys who are 125 like Jarred Brooks and Alex Silva. We’re all the same height. I wonder how you do 125 hydrated? I can do it, but when I’m next to them, I’m wider, I’m taller, but I’m the same height so ideally it gives people the opportunity to be in certain weight classes where if they were at 135 they would be at a disadvantage of cut.”

Other regional promotions around the world have already experimented with adding weight classes, but it will likely take a larger organization to take the plunge and move the industry forward as a whole. Many promotions point to the value of being able to give away more belts to make sense of events as a reason to add weight classes.

Currently, ONE Championship has the standard weight classes between 125 lbs and 265 lbs, with the addition of a 225 lb weight class for male MMA fighters. For women, the promotion has held fights from 115lbs to 135lbs. However, they do things differently.

ONE prohibits extreme weight loss via dehydration by having athletes compete at their natural “walking” weight. They perform hydration tests at weigh-ins to ensure fighters are properly hydrated 24 hours before their fight. This has proven to be safer for athletes.

Demetrious Johnson loves the way ONE Championship ‘mixes things up’

By the time Demetrious Johnson joined ONE Championship, he had already accomplished almost everything he could in MMA. After battling the creme de la creme in his division through the WEC and UFC, he was ready for new experiences in ONE Championship.

In the same JRE appearance, Johnson had this to say about his ONE experience:

“We had a boxing match, which was for a WBC title – boxing gloves, full boxing. It was a world title fight. That’s one of the things I love about ONE Championship is that they mix things up, so when I had the opportunity to go out there and compete like I knew I would, I had the opportunity to do something fun like I did with Rodtang.

So far, Demetrious Johnson has won the ONE MMA World Flyweight Championship and competed in a mixed rules bout with Rodtang. He is also entertained competing in the new grappling division against athletes like Mikey Musemeci.

The Brazilian jiu jitsu black belt is a complete fighter and has the freedom to compete in any opportunity that comes his way, be it MMA, striking, grappling or something in between.

‘Like getting my life back’: Steamboat’s SOSI performs lumbar spine surgery as part of FDA study https://ufc238.com/like-getting-my-life-back-steamboats-sosi-performs-lumbar-spine-surgery-as-part-of-fda-study/ Sun, 06 Nov 2022 20:06:00 +0000 https://ufc238.com/like-getting-my-life-back-steamboats-sosi-performs-lumbar-spine-surgery-as-part-of-fda-study/

Craig’s resident Donnie Kendall is not tender when it comes to pain.

Kendall was a mixed martial arts competitor, state champion weightlifter, boxer, and martial arts instructor. He has broken bones and had multiple surgeries, and he makes a living driving huge machinery for the Colowyo mine.

But, for the past two or three years, the progressive pain of a ruptured disc pushing on a nerve in his spine has prevented him from maintaining an active lifestyle and enjoying activities with his grandchildren. .

Doctors recommended Kendall undergo spinal fusion surgery, but he waited due to possible negative side effects. He withstood the pain because he knew a new spine technology was on the horizon.

Then, on October 11, he underwent innovative lumbar spine surgery to receive an artificial joint replacement as part of a US Food and Drug Administration study with Dr. Alex Sielatycki of the Steamboat Orthopedic & Spine Institute. .

“I’m really blown away,” said Kendall, 50. “It’s really amazing that there is now something that can help. It’s honestly like getting my life back.

Kendall was the first of 20 patients scheduled to have the procedure at Steamboat, and SOSI is the only Colorado site out of 15 study sites across the country to participate in implanting the new device, Sielatycki said. A fusion procedures study control group is taking place in Denver.

“MOTUS is the world’s first total joint replacement for the lumbar spine and the only true motion alternative to fusion,” says device developer 3Spine. “This unique approach replaces all three lower back structures in a single medical procedure while restoring freedom of movement.”

Craig resident Donnie Kendall is ‘blown away’ by the positive results so far after his October 11 surgery which implanted a MOTUS total joint replacement in his lumbar spine. Kendall is pictured with three of her five grandchildren.

Although artificial vertebral discs and facet joints also exist separately, MOTUS, which means movement in Latin, combines both the disc and the two facet joints in a single implant.

Sielatycki, who joined the SOSI team in March, is a fellow-trained orthopedic spine surgeon who performed three of the new procedures in October at Steamboat, including a Steamboat man in his 40s and a Craig man in the sixties. Five other patients are already scheduled for surgery, but interested patients can apply to be studied until the end of this year. Most patients suffer from degenerative wear and tear on the spine.

Total joint replacement provides the same benefits as traditional spinal fusion surgeries, but also preserves adjacent vertebral levels, restores natural balance, maintains range of motion, and relieves leg and back pain.

Traditional spinal fusion surgery is not a good solution for many patients, the 37-year-old surgeon said, as 75-80% of patients do not get full relief. Additionally, five years after a fusion procedure, 20-25% of patients may require a new fusion and 40-50% after 10 years.

“This motion-preserving lumbar joint replacement is truly the first of its kind and has the potential to dramatically change the way spine care is provided not just in this country but around the world,” said Sielatycki, who has been involved in pilot surgeries for the device since 2018. “I think we have an answer to the problem of lumbar fusion complications that has been going on for decades and has plagued so many patients.”

The surgeon said that approximately 75-80% of potential fusion patients would be eligible for MOTUS. Fusion surgery would still be needed for very complex deformities, spinal trauma, severe scoliosis, spinal tumors or spinal infections, he said.

Sielatycki said the MOTUS device has been in development for about 15 years and the implant for the study is fourth generation. The surgeon said MOTUS implantation is a difficult lumbar joint reconstruction surgery that takes up to three hours, but patients can go home the same afternoon. Patients walk the next day, but activities are restricted for three months.

“It’s harder for the surgeon because it’s a total shift in how we think about the lumbar spine,” Sielatycki said. “There are a lot of variables that surgeons have to think about and we don’t have to think about fusion surgery.”

Orthopedic spine surgeon Dr. Alex Sielatycki, who practices at the Steamboat Orthopedics and Spine Institute, is recruiting 20 area patients to participate in a surgical trial for FDA approval of a joint implant vertebral.
Elisa Maines/Courtesy Photo

The nationwide study is expected to be completed in early 2023, and since the FDA needs two years of results, device approval is expected in 2025.

“Based on biomechanical tests with simulated wear, the device still holds up. So, in theory, it should last a lifetime once implanted,” says Sielatycki. “All the data at this point is excellent.”

Kendall is still healing, but he is free from constant pain and is walking a mile a day two weeks after surgery. He looks forward to spending more active time outdoors with his five grandchildren, who range in age from 4 to 8 years old.

“The first thing I want to do is get my grandkids back,” Kendall said.

Ali Abdelaziz shares health update on ‘Rumble’ Anthony Johnson https://ufc238.com/ali-abdelaziz-shares-health-update-on-rumble-anthony-johnson/ Sat, 29 Oct 2022 13:03:00 +0000 https://ufc238.com/ali-abdelaziz-shares-health-update-on-rumble-anthony-johnson/ [ad_1]

In a recent interview with ESPN-MMA‘s Brett Okamoto, Anthony Johnson’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz, shared that the fighter was going through serious health issues.

The CEO of Dominance MMA Management asked everyone to pray for Johnson’s recovery:

“‘Rumble’ is having health issues at the moment. It’s very sad…I want everyone to pray for him…He’s not well, he’s very strong spiritually but please pray for him.. .Anthony, be strong, a lot of people love you and he’ll be fine, but he’s not fine [at the moment].”

“Rumble” was scheduled to face Vadim Nemkov at Bellator 268 in October 2021, but the fighter pulled out of the fight due to an unspecified illness. In an Instagram post last year, the former UFC light heavyweight title challenger asked fans to pray for his recovery:

“I really wish I could explain in detail how sick I really am. Just know that I need as many prayers as possible and I’ll see you in 2022 God willing…I’ve never had also afraid of anything in my life, but I stayed strong with the support of my friends and family.

Johnson holds an enviable professional record of 23 wins against six losses. He is a two-time challenger for the UFC light heavyweight title. The 38-year-old holds a UFC record of 13 wins and six losses.

Some of Anthony Johnson’s best UFC wins

It’s fair to say that Anthony Johnson has had a good run with the UFC. During his two tenures with the promotion, ‘Rumble’ has recorded wins against some of MMA’s top fighters.

At UFC 202 in 2016, the American earned a win by knockout on the former light heavyweight champion Glover Teixeira only 13 seconds into the fight. A vicious right uppercut followed by some hammer fists sealed the deal for ‘Rumble’.

The 38-year-old also holds a win against Alexander Gustafsson, who even gave GOAT Jon Jones a light heavyweight run for his money. Johnson picked up a first-round TKO victory over the Swede at UFC on Fox 14.

At UFC on Fox 18, “Rumble” won in spectacular fashion by knocking out The Ultimate Fighter 8 winner Ryan Bader in the very first round.

Daniel Rodriguez vs. Neil Magny in preparation for UFC Vegas 62 https://ufc238.com/daniel-rodriguez-vs-neil-magny-in-preparation-for-ufc-vegas-62/ Fri, 23 Sep 2022 01:00:00 +0000 https://ufc238.com/daniel-rodriguez-vs-neil-magny-in-preparation-for-ufc-vegas-62/ [ad_1]

Verbal agreements are in place for a welterweight matchup between Daniel Rodriguez and Neil Magny at UFC Vegas 62.

Several people with knowledge of the promotion’s plans have confirmed the matchup for the Oct. 15 event at UFC APEX in Las Vegas. Fight agreements are expected to be signed soon. MMA Island reported the pairing for the first time.

Rodriguez makes a quick turnaround after a prominent placement on the mixed UFC 279 card. Originally slated to face Kevin Holland at the pay-per-view event, he was rebooked against Li Jingliang when headliner Khamzat Chimaev’s lack of weight forced a last-second change. Rodriguez made the most of the change, outlining Jingliang in a somewhat controversial decision.

Rodriguez hosted a rematch with the Chinese fighter, whom he overtook by nearly 10 pounds, but instead accepted a fight with Magny, one of the 170-pound division’s longest-lasting presences. Magny is three months away from losing to hot prospect Shavkat Rakhmonov, who submitted him in the first round to snap a two-game winning streak.

Overall, Magny is 19-8 in the octagon and will look to stop the rise of another contender in Rodriguez, who is 7-1. UFC Vegas 62 is set to be headlined by a flyweight matchup between Alexa Grasso and Viviane Araujo.

Can Luke Stanich dethrone No. 1 Jax Forrest this weekend at Elite 8 Duals? https://ufc238.com/can-luke-stanich-dethrone-no-1-jax-forrest-this-weekend-at-elite-8-duals/ Wed, 21 Sep 2022 19:07:30 +0000 https://ufc238.com/can-luke-stanich-dethrone-no-1-jax-forrest-this-weekend-at-elite-8-duals/ [ad_1]

What is the biggest high school wrestling event in this country every year? Fargo? U17 World Team Trials? Super 32? You wouldn’t go wrong if you answered with one of these events, but even in its early stages, Elite 8 Duels can boast a higher concentration of talent than any other high school event on the calendar.

What makes the Elite 8 Duals so interesting is the fact that so many ranked athletes will compete in such a short time. Take the example of the confrontation between Jax Forest and Luke Stanich. If these two were in the same bracket at Super 32 they would have over 100 other wrestlers in their bracket and by the time they faced each other they would have been through between 4 and 6 matches depending on where they were seeded .

While we’re talking about Forrest vs. Stanich, let’s dig a little deeper into the match. Jax Forrest is all the rage right now. He won an Under-17 silver medal and went straight into Who’s Number One where he came away with a solid victory over No. 2 Nate Jesuroga and retained his number one ranking.

But Elite 8 is where the #1 ranking will die.

Last year, Nate Jesuroga went to Atlanta with a number one seed and came away with 2 weekend losses. This kind of result is commonplace at this event.

Luke Stanich is looking to make a similar impact on Forrest’s rankings this weekend, and he won’t have to wait long to do so. The two are set to meet on day one of the Elite 8 Duals as Team Dynasty take on Team Carnage.

Elbows make it easier

Folk season is upon us, and one thing that means for high school athletes is that eliminations are a little harder to secure. Folk wrestling allows the defensive athlete to take more risks because they don’t have to worry about exposing their back. That said, whenever someone can get away with an effortless takedown in Folkstyle, it should be encouraged.

Slides are about as simple as it gets in folkstyle for two reasons. First, and most importantly, slidebys are low risk and highly rewarding. Second, as soon as your opponent’s hand hits the mat it’s 2 points, whereas in freestyle you have to reduce them to an elbow, knee or head.

Check out Jax Forrest’s elbow control slide. It’s fast, it’s clean and it’s effortless. If he can find his way to the top of Stanich that easily, it’s going to be a long day for Luke.

Stanich should hold it up

Ernie Monaco and The Edge School of Wrestling have been around longer than any other club in the country. At the start of The Edge, they had a ton of success implementing techniques Ernie learned from watching the Russians, specifically a 2-on-1. While a lot of wrestling has changed since 1984, a lot many things, like a good 2-on-1 tie, will never go out of style.

True to Edge-Style, Luke Stanich can score in a variety of ways from this 2-on-1. His loss to Mason Gibson on the big stage in Fargo came down to the wire, but check out the takedown below. If Stanich wants to take Forrest down, he’ll have to get him out of position with this 2-on-1 and keep him as often as possible.

MMA veteran Chris Avila will face YouTube star Doctor Mike in a boxing match on the Jake Paul-Anderson Silva card https://ufc238.com/mma-veteran-chris-avila-will-face-youtube-star-doctor-mike-in-a-boxing-match-on-the-jake-paul-anderson-silva-card/ Tue, 20 Sep 2022 16:55:06 +0000 https://ufc238.com/mma-veteran-chris-avila-will-face-youtube-star-doctor-mike-in-a-boxing-match-on-the-jake-paul-anderson-silva-card/

The Jake Paul vs. Anderson Silva boxing undercard will feature an unorthodox matchup.

UFC and Bellator MMA veteran Chris Avila will face YouTube star Doctor Mike in a four-round professional boxing match on Oct. 29 in Glendale, Ariz., officials tell ESPN. . The contracted weight will be 185 pounds and the pair will fight with 10 ounce gloves. An official announcement is expected to be made later Tuesday.

Doctor Mike, real name Mikhail Varshavski, is a well-known social media influencer with over 23 million followers across all platforms and over 10 million YouTube subscribers.

Varshavski competed in an amateur boxing match in May, a unanimous decision against YouTube personality Ian “iDubbbz” Washburn. This event raised $1.3 million for charity, and Varshavski donated his entire fight purse to Ukrainian aid. For the Avila fight, Varshavski will donate her purse to the Boys & Girls Club, officials say.

“As a medical practitioner, I was sworn to ‘do no harm,’ but when those ‘examination’ gloves come off and the boxing gloves slip: all bets are off,” Varshavski said. through a press release. “With one win under my belt, I’m hungry to add more. And this pro fight with Chris Avila could be just what the doctor ordered.”

This will be Varshavski’s professional boxing debut, as he joins Paul as famous YouTubers competing against professional boxers.

Avila is 1-1 as a professional boxer and is an eight-year mixed martial arts veteran, longtime member of Nate Diaz’s team in Northern California. More recently, Avila defeated her sparring partner Paul Anthony Taylor last December in a majority decision boxing match. Avila is expected to be the first fighter signed with Diaz’s new promotional entity, Real Fight Inc., which is still in the process of being licensed by athletic commissions.

“Hmmmm, let’s see. I’m giving him a height advantage, a reach advantage, and an MD advantage,” Avila said Tuesday. “It’s nonsense. If he wants to go to fantasy boxing camp, then I’m happy to teach him whatever lesson he wants. A real fight against a real fighter who’s not there to play games or hunt for instagram.”

Also on the card, Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions top prospect Ashton Sylve, 18, will face boxing veteran Braulio Rodriguez in an eight-round bout contracted to 133 pounds, officials say. Sylve is undefeated at 7-0 with seven knockouts, and Rodriguez (20-4, 17 KOs) is just one fight away from competing against Ryan Garcia, a 2018 knockout loss at Madison Square Garden. This represents a major step forward in the competition for Sylve.

The card will be put together by MVP and distributed by Showtime.

“MVP was launched 14 months ago with the goal of elevating fighters and providing a platform that puts them first,” Paul and MVP co-founder Nakisa Bidarian said in a statement. “From the highest levels of boxing like Amanda Serrano, to elite young prospects like Ashton Sylve and unique crossover matchups like Avila vs. Dr. Mike, we pride ourselves on delivering exciting events that have something for everyone. On Saturday, October 29, we are proud to once again partner with Showtime and bring a night of boxing for the ages.”
