PARKERSBURG — Former Parkersburg South wrestlers Brayden Roberts and Braxton Amos are staying busy in the offseason.

Roberts, who wrestles for West Virginia University, is currently in Geneva, Ohio competing in the United World Wrestling and Freestyle World U20 Greco-Roman Tag Team Trials.

On Friday, the mountaineer finished his run in the Greco 72kg portion of the tournament. Roberts was upset 13-4 by Ashton Miess in the semi-final and suffered a 3-2 loss in the consolation semi-final to Kaden Reetz.

Now Roberts will compete in the U23 free bracket at 70kg. If he wins his slice, the ex-Patriot will represent the United States from October 17-23 at the U23 World Championships in Pontevedra, Spain.

Amos, a Wisconsin badger, finished 4-0 last month at the Greco-Roman 97kg World Team Trials in Coralville, Iowa.

With the win, Amos is now set to wrestle inside New York’s Madison Square Garden against world bronze medalist G’Angelo Hancock in the Final X, which is a best-of-three match, on Wednesday.

Amos, who is the reigning world junior champion in the same weight class for Greco-Roman wrestling, qualified as a freshman for the Badgers in the NCAA championships at 197 pounds.

The two-time Robert Dutton award winner has already qualified to represent the United States at the U23 World Championships in Spain with his win at the Senior Level Challenge tournament. However, Amos has yet to accept the spot on the U23 squad due to the timing of the start of his second season at Wisconsin.

Final X will air on Flowrestling starting with the first game at 2 p.m. Wednesday. The second game, and if necessary the third game, will start at 6 p.m. The winner will represent the United States from September 10-18 in Belgrade, Serbia.
