The Montana Intensive Wrestling Camp has drawn 350 wrestlers from across the continent and also Hawaii, and in the end there is a solid diversion on Wednesday nights.
The Flathead Brave Brawlers have a duel with nationally ranked Lowell, Mich., at 5:30 p.m. today at Flathead High School.
Admission is free, but donations to benefit the Flathead Valley Wrestling Club are appreciated.
Lowell, a nine-time Michigan State champion, is ranked 50th in the nation by MatScouts (rokfin.com), while Flathead falls outside the top 50 after winning the last two Montana AA titles.
“We have some very high ranked boys that we will try to bring in, because it’s fun and it’s a chance to shine a light on the sport and what’s happening in the Valley this week,” the coach said. by Flathead Jeff Thompson.
The matches are played in two periods: two minutes of folk style and two minutes of free style.
“Just because so many of these wrestlers are in the middle of their training cycle for the USAW Junior Nationals (July 16-22) in Fargo, ND,” Thompson said.
There will be plenty of marquee matches: Lowell’s Tacho Gonzalez vs. Flathead’s Cade Troupe at 160; Gabe Lake, who finished second in last year’s State AA tournament at 160, against Landon Miller; Lowell’s 170-pound Michigan State champion Casey Engle against Anders Thompson, who finished second at 170 at State in February.
In addition to a full men’s duel, there will be two marquee matches for girls and one match for boys:
Washington’s Anna DiCuiono is set to face Minnesota State Champion Rian Grunwald at 125 and Flathead’s Gannon Wisher against Hawaii’s Koen Shigemoto at 120.
Washington State champ AJ Salguero is penciled in to face 126-year-old Oregon State placer Eric Larwin.
