Cyclone Wrestling adds three on signing day

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State Wrestling Program and Head Coach Kevin Trainer announced the addition of three prep wrestlers on Wednesday. Tate Naaktgeboren, McCrae Hagarty and Blake Gioimo — all high school products from Iowa — make up the Cyclones’ class of 2023 and are expected to arrive on campus for the 2023-24 season.

“On behalf of our team and staff, we welcome these three young men to Iowa State wrestling,” Dresser said. “We’re excited to see these guys in their senior year and then see them transition into college life over the summer. Tate and McCrae bring multiple state titles as well as national level accolades and will add a lot of strength to our top weights. Blake is a lightweight guy who we think has a lot of potential. I’m sure we’ll add a few more to this class in the near future, but it’s a good start.

Here is an overview of the new additions:

Tate Naaktgeboren
Hometown: Marion, Iowa
High school: Linn Mar
Projected weight class: 184 pounds
Naaktgeboren will join the Cyclones next fall after an exceptional preparatory career at Linn-Mar High School. A three-time runner-up with two Class 3A state titles under his belt (2021, 2022), Naaktgeboren projects himself as a 184-pounder for the Cyclones. He is ranked No. 19 overall in the Class of 2023 by MatScouts and No. 6 at 182 pounds nationally by FloWrestling. With a senior season still to struggle, Naaktgeboren has an outstanding 96-5 high school record, including a 44-2 mark last year.

McCrae Hagarty
Hometown: Waverley, Iowa
High school: Waverly Shell-Rock
Projected weight class: 197 pounds
Hagarty is another accomplished Iowa High School product and will join the Waverly Shell-Rock High School Cyclones where he won two state tag team championships. Hagarty will enter his senior season in high school with a career record of 117-8, including 82-1 over the past two seasons. He is a three-time Class 3A state medalist, placing fourth as a freshman before winning back-to-back titles at 182 pounds and 195 pounds as a sophomore and junior, respectively. Hagarty is also a 16U All-American in Freestyle and Greco-Roman. He is ranked by MatScouts as the No. 59 overall prospect in the nation and is the No. 11 195-pounder nationally by FloWrestling.

Blake Gioimo
Hometown: Fairfax, Iowa
High school: Cedar Rapids Meadow
Projected weight class: 125 pounds
Gioimo is one of Iowa’s top lightweight wrestling prospects and will join Cedar Rapids Prairie High School’s Iowa State wrestling program. Gioimo is a two-time Class 3A State Finalist at 106 pounds and 113 pounds, respectively. He is 62-2 over the past two seasons. Gioimo, who projects at 125 pounds for the Cyclones, was also part of the 16U double national team last season after finishing second at the 16U Freestyle State Championships. He is ranked No. 3 in IAwrestle’s Class 3A 120-pound preseason rankings.
