Charles Oliveira may no longer be the official UFC lightweight champion, but that hasn’t stopped everyone from seeing him as the champ. Joe Rogan recently opened up about how the Brazilian was cheated out of his lightweight title.
There were a lot of questions about the scales used at the UFC 274 weigh-ins and the scale used in the back for the fighters. Joe Rogan thinks people were having fun with the one in the back.
“He’s a very, very nice guy, and he got screwed in his last fight,” Rogan said on a recent episode of “The Joe Rogan Experience” podcast on Spotify. “There were shenanigans with the scale. Some people had played with the scale. Here’s a problem with these digital scales: foreign fighters, they use kilograms and in America, of course, we use pounds.
“These scales are calibrated and then the foreign fighters reset the scale so they can put it back in kilograms. So it screws up the whole calibration. He weighed himself the night before the weigh-ins and he was like, ‘Oh, I’m ready to go.’ And then in the morning he goes and shows up for the weight cut, and it’s a pound lighter, and it’s directly related to this calibration stuff.
Dana White spoke at the UFC 274 press conference and was asked if he had a solution for the scale. He said there would now be a security guard to avoid any problems in the future.
“Now the UFC has a new policy because of this, where they have a guard watching the scale 24 hours a day,” Rogan added. “Like, they have shifts where no one can fuck with the scale. If you’re going to climb that ladder to try your hand, they’re going to stare at you like a hawk, and you don’t press any buttons. Just go up, what’s your weight, go down. That’s it. These guys were monkeying around with the scales.
He continued, “It’s Phoenix. It is what it is, and it’s not a knock on Phoenix. I like Phoenix. It’s just that the people who are there don’t regularly do high level world championship fights in MMA. They make a few. We had a great time there. They had some good events there, but they just made a mistake. They’ll let these guys do it. There should have been someone watching the scale, and the scale was off, and that’s a fact. Look, that’s not the best excuse because Justin Gaethje has gained weight. Everyone has gained weight except for one of the women who fought earlier in the night, but that’s it.
