Masvidal took issue with several decisions Herb Dean made in some of his past fights and asked the referee never to officiate any of his future fights.
Jorge Masvidal never wants veteran UFC referee Herb Dean to oversee one of his fights again.
Masvidal is not a fan of Dean, who is one of MMA’s most respected referees, and has accused the referee of having an agenda against him. Dean oversaw many of Masvidal’s fights during his UFC career, including his last two outings against Colby Covington and Kamaru Usman.
‘Gamebred’ thinks Dean doesn’t like him and it shows when he referees one of his fights. “I’m not a Herb Dean fan, man, I’ll tell you,” Masvidal said on The MMA Hour.
“We had some problems and the Donald Cerrone [fight] was one of them. Jake Ellenberger too. I don’t think I’m his cup of tea and he picks on me when he referees.”

In 2017, Masvidal apparently knocked out Cerrone twice in their fight, but Dean didn’t stop the fight after “Cowboy” was seriously injured late in the first round. Masvidal also picked up an odd stoppage victory over Ellenberger the year before when his foot got caught in the cage.
Masvidal said that in his past fight against bitter rival Covington in March, a low blow went unpunished from Dean. Masvidal acknowledges that the illegal strike would not have changed the outcome of his decision loss, but feels that Dean should have taken other action than to warn Covington.
“He’s done things that look like me, it’s kind of weird,” Masvidal continued. “[Covington] clearly throwing a low kick – I’m not saying that changes the outcome – but clearly he’s throwing an intentional low kick, and Herb doesn’t do anything about it, just gives him a little warning. I do not know. I hope that as long as I compete, Herb Dean will never referee or judge any of my fights.”
In the main event of UFC Vegas 56 between Alexander Volkov and Jairzinho Rozenstruik this past weekend, Dean was at the center of the controversy. Rozenstruik was seriously injured by Volkov but appeared to be back on his feet after being let go, but Dean stepped in to stop the fight.
If Masvidal is to compete again in the UFC’s home state of Nevada, he can request a hearing to have Dean not oversee his respective fight. Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones did it with John McCarthy because he felt the referee treated him unfairly.
