Leon Edwards bought a restaurant from his mother after a huge win over Kamaru Usman

Leon Edwards has revealed the amazing gift he bought for his mother after his big win at UFC 278.

Last August in Salt Lake City, Leon Edwards shocked the world when he knocked out Kamaru Usman in the fifth round of their title showdown to win the UFC welterweight championship.

It came at the end of a grueling encounter that many saw was a comfortable decision victory for Usman – the pound-for-pound king at the time.

Alas, mixed martial arts is an unpredictable sport and it truly is never over until it’s over, as “Rocky” proved by completing a true underdog story to ensure that he brings the belt back to the Midlands.

The road to the top was long and hard for Leon, but through it all, someone who was there by his side every step of the way was his mother.

Many fans will recall seeing her break down on FaceTime immediately after the win, with the Birmingham native continually referencing the importance she has had in her career over the past few years.

Now, as the man himself confirmed in a recent interview, Edwards thanks his mother for her support in a rather special way.

“I gave her a car before but this time she wanted like a restaurant. She’s a very good cook, she loves to cook. I kept saying I could find someone to work there for you, but she said no, I want to work there and I want to cook there – she wants to.

“So now we’re trying to open a restaurant, I’ve found a space now and we’re fixing it, outfitting it, and yes, it should open in the next two or three weeks.”

“She’s excited for this, a little project for her to do and yeah, I’m excited for her.”

The future

While Leon can relax for another month or two, his attention will quickly turn to next March when he plans to defend his newly won belt against the man he took it from, Kamaru Usman.

Edwards has previously said he wants the fight to take place in the UK and if he is successful it could actually take place at Villa Park in Birmingham.

Regardless of where it is, though, you have to imagine it has the potential to be one of the biggest fights the UFC has put on in the past decade.
