Luca Augustine de Pitt Named US Wrestling Athlete of the Week

PITTSBURGH—University of Pittsburgh student-athlete Luca Augustin was honored as American Wrestling Athlete of the Week after his dominating performances to win an individual gold medal at the 2022 Under-20 Pan American Championships in Oaxtepec, Mexico.

Augustine triumphed at the 79-kilogram freestyle wrestling tournament in Mexico on Sunday, claiming U20 Pan American gold with four straight technical drop shutout victories and winning the title of Best U20 Pan American Championship Wrestler.

Talented wrestler Pitt, who last season wore the red shirt in his first year with the Panthers, beat Brazilian Guilherme Barros de Arruda Porto (10-0), Mexican Miguel Lavielle Ramirez (10-0), Colombia’s Juan Cardozo Ibata (10-0) and Canada’s Connor Church (11-0) in his tournament clear round.

Augustine’s success was the latest high point in a string of triumphs by Pitt wrestlers in freestyle competition. The Waynesburg, Pennsylvania product was crowned United States U20 Freestyle Champion earlier this year, while Pitt’s Cole Matthews and Nino Bonaccorsi recently won US U23 titles while competing for Pittsburgh Wrestling Club.

After his redshirt season, Augustine is expected to compete for the starting spot at 174 pounds for the Panthers in 2022-23. Matthews (141 lbs) and Bonaccorsi (197 lbs) also return as national contenders in their respective weight classes, as do Micky Philippe at 133 pounds.

After a summer of freestyle success and exciting news about the Pitt wrestling program, including a contract extension for the head coach Keith Gavin for at least the 2027 season, the Panthers will now focus on preparing for the upcoming season with a dual schedule to be released in the coming weeks.
