Nick Negumereanu scores quick TKO against Ike Villanueva

The first fight on the main card of UFC Fight Night 196 didn’t last very long.

Light heavyweights Nick Negumereanu and Ike Villanueva didn’t waste much time stepping into action at UFC Apex in Las Vegas on Saturday.

In a fight that had ended early written all over the place, the result certainly lived up to expectations. Negumereanu (11-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) and Villanueva (18-13 MMA, 1-4 UFC) met in the center of the cage and punched him to see who would stand. The two attacking-minded fighters landed strikes, but it would be Negumereanu who would have been right in the exchanges.

Just over a minute into the action, Negumereanu let Villanueva down and put the finishing touches on his opponent with follow-up hammer blows, prompting the referee to stop the fight as Villanueva covered himself on the carpet. The official stopping time was 1:18 in the first lap.

The save was not without controversy, however, as a few of the punches Negumereanu landed on the ground landed in the back of the head. Villanueva immediately complained to the referee about where the strikes had landed, but the official match result would not have changed.

Negumereanu takes his second victory of the calendar year, following his split decision victory over Aleksa Camur in June.
