Pat Smith wins world team spot at end of competition in Lincoln

LINCOLN, Neb. – A full weekend of wrestling ended Sunday night at the Senior World Team Trials at Pinnacle Bank Arena, as former Gopher Pat Smith highlighted the weekend by earning his third place on the World Team in career in the Greco-Roman weight of 72 kilograms division.

Smith, who represented Minnesota Storm RTC as the top seed in their group, pinned Griffin Parriott in the quarterfinals and beat Michael Hooker 4-0 in the semifinals en route to the Best Of 3 against Benji Peak (New York Athletic Club). In the final, Smith continued his winning streak, sweeping the series with 3-3, 6-4 to make his third team in the world.

Another former Gopher, Alec Ortiz, also competed in Greco-Roman at 77 kilograms, but fell out of the tournament in the consolation semifinals.

On the men’s freestyle side, Hayden Zillmer proved to be the best performer in Gopher Wrestling Club of the weekend in his first 125-kilogram tournament. Ranked as the No.6 seed to open the tournament, Zillmer defeated third seed Dom Bradley 5-3, before losing a tough game 8-4 to Mason Parris in the semifinals. Zillmer would rebound from the back of the group on Sunday, beating Ty Walz in the consolation semifinals, then beating Bradley for the second time in as many days to win the tournament bronze medal.

the other three competitors of the Gopher Wrestling Club, Brayton leeDaniel DeShazer and Elroy Perkin all came out of the tournament in Saturday’s consolations.

70kg – DNP: Brayton lee (1-2)
70kg – DNP: Elroy Perkin (0-2)
61kg – DNP: Daniel DeShazer (2-2)

Greco-Roman results:
72kg – First place: Pat Smith (4-0)
77kg – DNP: Alec Ortiz (1-2)
