Rafael Fiziev out against Rafael dos Anjos due to COVID

Rising UFC lightweight contender Rafael Fiziev will not be competing at UFC 272 this weekend.

Fiziev was forced to withdraw from his fight against former champion Rafael dos Anjos, which was scheduled to be the co-main event on Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Fiziev has tested positive for COVID-19 and is showing symptoms.

Fiziev (11-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC) confirmed he was out Twitter after Ariel Helwani broke the news on Monday.

“I am devastated to report that I am out of action,” Fiziev wrote. “I had a great camp and was ready to put on the show, I flew to Vegas from Thailand just to get sick with covid, for 3 days I’m in a hotel bed with fever, bone pain and cough.

“I called RDA and I still want this fight when my health allows me to compete again. Apologies to him, but to say I was faking it is complete nonsense. Time will put everything in place”

The UFC is currently trying to keep dos Anjos (31-13 MMA, 19-11 UFC) on the card and looking for a replacement on short notice.

Renato Moicano’s management informed MMA Junkie’s Nolan King that the Brazilian was interested in stepping in at short notice and informed the UFC of his interest. Moicano last fought Feb. 12 at UFC 271, submitting Alexander Hernandez in the second round.

Dos Anjos indicated during his appearance on “The MMA Hour” that he is ready to fight someone on short notice.

“I’m always ready to fight anyone. Paul Felder was also a last minute substitute for Islam in the fight,” dos Anjos said. “…I’m a fighter. I know I have to be careful what fights I take, who I choose right now because at this point in my career, a loss is not going to be good right now. This is my third title shot, but I’m a fighter and I’m always ready for anyone.

Dos Anjos has not competed since beating Felder, who took the fight on five days notice, in November 2020.
