Belal Muhammad wants to dethrone UFC champion Kamaru Usman

UFC welterweight contender Khamzat Chimaev wants to face Nate Diaz and Belal Muhammad within months of each other later this year.

Chimaev is the No. 3 ranked welterweight contender in the promotion and is the highest ranked fighter champion Kamaru Usman has yet to beat. But he will have to wait his turn for a shot at the belt as Leon Edwards gets his world title rematch against the Nigerian on August 20.

The Swede may even want to take part in this event, indicating that he wants to face fan favorite Diaz in August before taking on No. 5 contender Muhammad just over two months later. He and Muhammad have already verbally agreed to meet at UFC 281 in Abu Dhabi on October 22, and Chimaev would like to sneak in one more fight in the meantime.

“I want to fight in August, I’m ready Nate Diaz, let’s make it lean,” Chimaev said in a tweet yesterday that tagged UFC and boss Dana White. He then posted that he planned to fight Diaz in August and Muhammad in October.

Diaz appeared to indicate he was not interested in fighting Chimaev in a deleted tweet yesterday, although he did not address the fighter by name. He tweeted: “Sorry b**** a**n**** I have 4-0 on you, I don’t want any more rematches for this company.”

The American could be referring to the numerous times he claims to have asked to fight Chimaev, as the duo have been repeatedly offered fights against each other. But Diaz also repeatedly turned down the Swede so it’s unclear what he meant.

Chimaev first rose to fame due to his remarkable activity, agreeing to face former BAMMA champion Rhys McKee in a 15-pound lowerweight division on just one week’s notice after defeating another former BAMMA champion. in his debut against John Phillips. But after a 17-second knockout of Gerald Meerschaert in September 2020, illness nearly cost him his career.

He returned over a year later at UFC 267 last October, doing light work on Li Jingliang in one round and setting up a showdown with former world title challenger Gilbert Burns. He was given the first real test of his career by the Brazilian, vying for a unanimous decision victory.

And he is now looking to resume the activity that has seen his star rise at a rapid pace in 2020 as he takes on two big stars in Diaz and Muhammad. Diaz is one of the most famous fighters in the world, but he would probably find a fight against Chimaev difficult to maneuver.

Meanwhile, Muhammad would be a fascinating opponent, given his recent form and impressive ranking. Wins over both men would almost certainly see Chimaev book a title opportunity against Usman’s winner against Edwards 2.
