Rivera set for 2022 Pan Am Championships


PISCATAWAY, NJ – Five-time All-American and 2022 NCAA bronze medalist Sebastien Rivera will compete at the 2022 Pan American Championships on Sunday, May 8 in Acapulco, Mexico. Rivera will wrestle freestyle at 65kg and represent Team Puerto Rico as one of the top seeds in the field.

The fight will begin at 11 a.m. ET with qualifying and repechage rounds, followed by the medal rounds at 6 p.m. The entire Men’s Freestyle Tournament will be streamed on FloWrestling.

Rivera battled for a fifth-place finish for Team Puerto Rico at last year’s Pan American Championships in Guatemala City, Guatemala, where we advanced to the championship semifinals at 65kg.

The Toms River, New Jersey native finished his final college season with a 30-1 record en route to a third-place finish at the 2022 NCAA Wrestling Championships in Detroit. Rivera became the fourth person to place in the top three at national championships for the Scarlet Knights, joining Antoine Ashnault (2019), Nick Suriano (2018 & 2019) and Mike Leta (1960). Rivera and Leta are the only national bronze medalists in program history. Rivera also finished as the national leader in tech falls last season with 14 and won 25 of his games with bonus points.

Rivera closed out his college career as a five-time All-American (four NCAA, one NWCA) and two-time Big Ten champion. Rivera has produced 115 career wins, including 20 at the NCAA Tournament and 42 for Rutgers.

Rutgers completed another successful season under the head coach Scott Goodale, as the Scarlet Knights closed the double campaign with their most wins (16) since the 2012-13 season and their highest final ranking in the NWCA Coaches’ Poll (14) since 2017. qualified seven for the 2022 NCAA Championships – the most since 2017 – and all participants have scored at the national tournament. Rivera and Greg Bulsack (197) added All-America honors to make it seven straight seasons with multiple NCAA All-Americans.
