Schlotthauer wins three state titles in three different wrestling divisions – Monterey Herald


Ayden Schlotthauer was state champion in his age and weight class in three different divisions, winning gold in greco, freestyle and folk style in the state tournament’s novice division.

A member of G Style Wrestling Club in Salinas, Schlotthauer had 42 wins last season at 135 pounds in the 11/12 age division, winning the 2022 California USA Wrestling Triple Crown.

He was also the Santa Clara Valley Association grand champion in freestyle, folkstyle, and greco, and was folkstyle champion at the San Joaquin Tournament.

Her recent performance helped G Style Wrestling win a State Tag Team Title. Schlotthauer is coached by Paul Gomez and Kelly St. John.

MPC Contreras pitcher signs with Simpson College

Isabella Contreras turned two seasons of softball at Monterey Peninsula College into a paid education at a university for the next two years.

The former North Salinas pitcher has committed to Simpson University on a scholarship, where she will be one of the staff aces in the circle.

Last year, Contreras was 9-4 in 18 starts for the Lobos with a 2.07 ERA. The right-hander struck out 56 batters in 111 innings.

Contreras is the 11th player in the MPC’s last three seasons to earn a scholarship to play at a four-year college.

Synchronized swimming sensations

Corinne Harris won the dual event, capturing the tricks and the solo competition at the June Artistic Swimming Championships at the Pattullo Swim Center in Seaside.

A member of the Cypress Swim Club in the AWD division, Harris was among a handful of gold medalists at the competition which featured clubs from central and northern California.

Stephanie DeSousa and Leslie Perez Palma won gold in the masters division in the duet routine, Perez Palma picked up a silver medal in the solo and DeSousa a bronze medal.

Scarlet Dotterer won the solo competition at the advanced level and teamed with her sister, Reagan, to finish second in the duo. Reagan also finished third in the solo routine.

The club won another gold medal in the mid-level trio routine, with Sofia Carmona Young, Natalie Gera and Daphne DeCarlo claiming the 13-15 age division.

DeCarlo also finished third in the solo routine, with Young placing fourth and Gera fifth. DeCarlo took bronze in tricks, edging out the Reagan sisters and Scarlett Dotterer.

Competing in the 11-12 split, Elena DeCarlo finished second in solos and teamed up with Katelyn Gera to place third in the duo.

Carmona Young, DeCarlo, sisters Reagan and Scarlett Dotterer and sisters Katelyn and Natalie Gera won bronze in the intermediate team routine. Jannah Noonari finished third in novice solo and Areej Salah fifth.

Fuentes completes his first softball season at Iowa State

Former Herald Softball Player of the Year Angelita Fuentes completed her first season for Iowa State, playing 20 games, including 11 behind the plate.

The catcher hit .268 for the Cyclones, hitting his first collegiate home run and making five runs. Defensively, Fuentes sported a .947 field percentage.

A four-year starter at Notre Dame, Fuentes was the team’s MVP as a sophomore. She hit four homers during a shortened 2021 senior season.

Her Iowa State teammate and former Santa Catalina slugger Abby Gunter made the most of her eight appearances, hitting .429 with four RBIs.

Holes in one

Noah Woehler, Chris Musci, Caleb Martin and Somsak Pitak all recently recorded a hole-in-one at Del Monte Golf Course in Monterey.

Woehler used a 5-iron to hit the 200-yard No. 6 hole, while Musci also relied on a 5-iron to send the ball 178 yards into the No. 4 hole. Martin also recorded a holeshot. a hit on the No. 4, while Pitak took a 7-wood on the No. 12 hole.
