Scott Coker wants to make Gable Steveson an MMA ‘megastar’

Despite Gable Steveson’s signing to WWE, Bellator CEO Scott Coker is still keen to have a conversation with the Olympic gold medalist, suggesting he wants to make the 21-year-old an MMA “megastar”.

Steveson became the most prominent free agent in combat sports this summer. At the delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympics, the Indiana native took first place on the freestyle wrestling podium after beating reigning three-time world champion Geno Petriashvili. He also beat reigning Olympic champion Taha Akgül earlier in the competition.

Following his success in Japan, Steveson’s stock has grown exponentially. Riding him as well as he could, the burgeoning fight star embarked on a tour around various promotions that were after his signing. This included an appearance at the Bellator 265 last month.

Prior to the event, it was no secret that Coker wanted to bring Steveson up for promotion. Despite competing for the free agent, the 58-year-old suggested Bellator was the best home for the wrestling sensation. He also revealed that contacts have already been made with Steveson’s management team.

In the end, it was WWE that landed the much sought-after signing. After an appearance on WWE SummerSlam, as well as a photo with President Vince McMahon, it seemed like a move to pro wrestling was inevitable. But while the battle for Steveson is seemingly over, Coker isn’t ready to give up just yet.

In a recent interview with The Schmo, the Bellator hub wondered if Steveson’s deal with WWE was preventing him from participating in MMA. The South Korean-born promoter has suggested that a conversation with the future star is needed to determine if Bellator may have the opportunity to make him a superstar.

“Yeah, I mean listen, we’d like to have another conversation with him.” I’m not sure what his obligations are now with pro wrestling after finishing collegiate wrestling, so we’ll have a conversation with him. But yeah, if he’s available to do both, we would do it in a second because I think we have some great and fun games here. And listen, we’re really good star builders and star identifiers. I think this kid is going to be a star. I think we have a great program to make him a megastar who can really fight in MMA. But that will depend on him.

While he’s also garnered interest from the UFC and the Minnesota Vikings, Steveson has followed in Brock Lesnar and Kurt Angle’s footsteps, putting pen to paper to strike a deal with the biggest pro wrestling company.

While his immediate future may lie in WWE, it remains to be seen if Steveson will try his hand at the Octagon once his stardom increases further.

Do you think Gable Steveson should start a mixed martial arts career with Bellator MMA?
