Showtime president Stephen Espinoza apparently trolls Dana White in light of Kamaru Usman-Canelo Alvarez situation

Showtime president Stephen Espinoza has slammed Kamaru Usman for accusing Canelo Alvarez of dodging him. According to Espinoza, UFC fighters are not yet familiar with the fact that boxers can choose their own opponents.

Espinoza thinks it’s not just about ducking someone for the boxers, it’s about having the freedom to choose your fights. The Showtime president has apparently leaned into Dana White, claiming UFC fighters let a “kickboxing instructor” pick their fights. White used to ply his trade as a boxing instructor before his UFC days. In response to Usman, Espinoza wrote on Twitter:

“LOL. UFC fighters want that boxing check but don’t understand that boxers have the autonomy to choose their opponents. It’s not about not wanting to ‘smoke’. It’s about professional self-determination, a concept foreign to those who let the kickboxing instructor choose their fights.”

Espinoza’s comments came in response to a tweet from ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ where he said Canelo Alvarez didn’t want ‘smoke’. Prior to that, Alvarez had apparently turned down the crossover superfight, saying it wasn’t Usman’s turn yet.

Enough said… you don’t want that smoke in a real fight. I hear you! Good luck champion 👊🏿 twitter.com/canelo/status/…

Joe Rogan wants to see Kamaru Usman against Canelo Alvarez

Currently recovering from hand surgery, Kamaru Usman has long been lining up for a crossover fight against super middleweight boxing champion Canelo Alvarez. While the event promises a lucrative salary, UFC President Dana White isn’t too fond of the idea of a crossover fight.

White is skeptical of Kamaru Usman’s chances against Alvarez in a boxing match and doesn’t see the fight selling as well as Conor McGregor against Floyd Mayweather. However, many others in the combat sports community want to see two of the greatest fighters on the planet trade fists.

UFC color commentator and podcaster Joe Rogan thinks fighting Canelo will be invaluable experience for Usman even if he loses. Wishing him a big payday, Rogan said on the Hotboxin’ with Mike Tyson podcast:

“I would love to see him fight Canelo, I really would. Not because I think he’s a favorite in a boxing match against one of the greatest boxers of all time, but I want to see him earn a paycheck. Giant The same way I’d like to see [Francis] Ngannou fights Tyson Fury. It’s a way to make a lot of money, and I don’t think it hurts his potential as a UFC fighter. I think it would be invaluable experience for him, as a champion, if he had that fight and then came back to MMA. I think he would probably be even better as a striker if he comes out relatively unscathed, even if he loses.
