SIUE Wrestling signs three Impact student-athletes

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE Wrestling Head Coach Jeremy Spates announced the signing of three wrestlers from the state for the 2022-23 season.

Bryson Buhk (DeKalb, Ill.), Damari Reed (Calumet Park, Ill.) and Antonio Torres (Aurora, Ill.) announced their intention to compete for the SIUE fight next season.

Buhk, a DeKalb High School native, is a two-time state medalist with a third-place finish at the IHSA Class 3A Championships last season. He also finished third statewide two seasons ago. He also stood out in baseball for DeKalb.

“As a two-sport athlete, we really liked Bryson’s potential as a next-level wrestler,” Spates said. “He’s a forward-moving grinder that’s very brave. He’s what we’re looking for in terms of ability from our top weights.”

Reed is a two-time Class 3A State Finalist at Shepherd High School and IWCOA State Champion. Projected at 157 or 165 pounds, the Cougars love his potential.

“Damari is capable of doing really special things at the top level,” Spates said. “His lack of wrestling on the national stage has really made him a hidden gem. We think we had a steal and are excited about what he brings to our program from a technical, physical and mental standpoint. .”

Torres is a three-time state medalist, including a runner-up finish for Waubonsie High School last season. The 2022 state freestyle champion, Torres is also looking to break into the range at 165 or 174 pounds.

“Antonio is a character kid with unlimited potential,” Spates said. “As a two-sport athlete, he will excel at the next level given his athletic ability and room for technical improvement. He has all the physical tools to compete at a high level in college.”
