The manager gets real on the ugly side of MMA management

Tyson Chartier has plenty of experience in the MMA world and has worked with some of the best fighters in the UFC. He is currently the manager of top bantamweight Rob Font and top featherweight Calvin Kattar.

Tyson Chartier has heard plenty of stories from fighters who contacted him. Many only have the goal of getting into the UFC. He talked about it in an interview with

“One big complaint I get from a lot of fighters I don’t represent who contact me privately is [them saying], “I feel like my manager doesn’t really have my best interests in mind,” Chartier told “But if I leave them I’m told I’m going to be blacklisted and he’s going to fuck me” so they get caught up in this MMA purgatory where they don’t like who their manager is but they’ve been told says in very uncertain terms that if you leave said manager you will be blacklisted with the UFC or whoever.

“He is a tough man. Obviously, this is a very dirty business on the management side. It would be nice if there were checks and balances there. That’s why you don’t see me having 100 athletes that I manage.

The manager also trains his fighters. He has their best interest in mind and sees himself as protecting UFC fighters from the uglier sides of the game. They are friends first and clients second.

“I only manage people because I want to protect them from the bad guys in sport. I focus on managing people who I think are good people, who have good teams around them and I want seeing them achieve their goals,” he explained. “I started managing guys like Rob back then because I wanted to help them. He’s my friend, he’s my teammate. I wanted to help him.

“And once you get to a certain level, you realize that all these people coming out of the woods just want to make money from these people. They are just a number for that person. She’s the hot new girl in class. They want to take them out, fuck them and move on to the next hot girl. I won’t let my guys be prostitutes, for lack of a better term. I protect these guys from these sharks.
