Aspinall admits Tommy Fury would ‘break’ him in fight

Tom Aspinall insists he has “a lot more work to do” before he thinks about challenging for the UFC heavyweight title.

Since signing with the UFC two years ago, Aspinall has won five straight wins by stoppage. He will be looking to make it six in a row on July 23 when he headlines the second UFC event in London this year against Curtis Blaydes.

A win over Blaydes would push Aspinall into the top five in the division and with champion Francis Ngannou’s future uncertain, the Brit could very well be in the game for a chance at the belt. But Aspinall explained why he was not yet interested in a title shot.

“It doesn’t even interest me,” he said on MMA hour. “I’m not. I never thought I was going to talk about a title after five UFC fights, six UFC fights. I feel like I have more work to do. I still have a lot more work to do, more evidence. I don’t want to be one of those people who come in here talking. That’s not me.”

“Curtis Blaydes is probably the toughest fight in the division for me stylistically, but I’m okay with that because it pushes me to a whole new level,” he continued. “It pushes me to levels I’ve never reached before, and that’s what I need.”

Aspinall became the first person to submit MMA veteran Alexander Volkov in more than a decade when they fought at the O2 arena in March. The buzz of a UFC home event has kept Aspinall from competing in the United States, as he only wants to fight in England at this time.

He thinks a fighter of Blaydes’ caliber will get the best out of him, adding: “If I’m with someone who’s going to make me feel comfortable, I’m going to stay exactly where I am and do the exact same job as I If you’re gonna give me someone I think is a scary fight and you’re gonna scare me, you don’t want to see me scared.

“I end up doing stuff like I did in the O2 the time I fought. I end up doing crazy stuff that I’ve never done before. So me with a massive fight with a guy really hard, it’s dangerous. It’s dangerous for any heavyweight.
