UFC Africa event ‘going to happen very soon’

LAS VEGAS – Good news for MMA fans in Africa.

UFC President Dana White revealed after UFC 279 on Saturday that the UFC is in serious talks to host an event on the continent in the near future. White didn’t specify which countries or cities they were looking at specifically, but that’s something that’s already being discussed.

“We literally had a meeting the other day, and we’re talking serious about Africa now,” White told reporters at the UFC 279 post-fight press conference. places and cities to organize an event. Africa is coming very soon.

Bringing promotion to Africa has been a topic of discussion for some time. White has said in the past that it was something he wanted to accomplish before his promoting career ended.

Earlier this year, MMA Junkie Radio spoke with UFC Vice President of Regulatory Affairs Marc Ratner about possible plans for the UFC to go to Africa. Ratner specifically mentioned interest in Johannesburg, South Africa as a potential first landing spot for the promotion.

“I believe we will go to Johannesburg one day. I think it will happen. We have to let all this Francis (Ngannou) and contract all play out. Would I like to see it? Absolutely.”

The UFC has never organized an event in Africa. In recent years, African talent on the UFC roster has increased dramatically. There are two current UFC champions from Africa: Israel Adesanya (Nigeria) and Francis Ngannou (Cameroon). There are also several big contenders in the area.
