Nick and Nate Diaz are two of the toughest and most respected fighters in UFC history, the brawling brothers fearing no one – and that includes undefeated former champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.
The undefeated Russian, who retired after beating Justin Gaethje at UFC 254 in 2020, has focused on training fighters rather than competing, but his drive and desire remain stronger than ever.
Diaz, who called the 29-0 fighter a “p****” in January 2021, has never been one to back down from a fight, having battled it out on the streets of Stockton, Calif., in his childhood.
The first incident took place during the World Series of Fighting (now the Professional Fighters League) in 2015 when Khabib was watching his brother fight on the same night as Jake Shields, a friend of the Diaz brothers.
Diaz recalled the altercation when journalist and broadcaster Ariel Helwani asked him in October 2019 if he would be interested in fighting UFC lightweight champion Khabib.
“No, I was when it was interesting, now it’s like kicking a dead dog,” he said.
“I ain’t into that bully shit, he’s [Khabib] in bullying and all that, that’s his thing.
“When I ran into him and his team at the World Series, I was there watching Jake, my friend, fight. And they took a group photo with me behind them, just to laugh at me, to laugh of me.
“Our trilogy will happen,” says McGregor congratulating Diaz on his UFC career
Fury, Crawford and Whyte could succeed in MMA after calling out UFC fighters
“[Khabib] is like, ‘Ah, come on, man’ and they’re all laughing, 12 Russian guys. I slapped him for making fun of me and I was like, ‘What?’ And he did nothing.
“I was outside furious,” Diaz added of the 2015 incident. “So I waited for him to come out and went to get him again and he ran away.
” I should not have done that. It was reckless, it was stupid. I was angry, but he blamed me. So now he’s trying to act like “Mr Make It Right”. “I’m Mr Good, this guy is an asshole, I don’t need that foul language”.
“Anyway, you were going to come after me…trying to act like the victim, this Conor [McGregor] was going after him,” he added of the infamous brawl that broke out after the Russian’s fight with the Irishman in 2018.
Nick, who also fought in the UFC, was filmed throwing a drink in Khabib’s direction before security arrived and duly kicked the brothers out, but tempers flared again at UFC 239 .
Despite all the action on this card in July 2019 (which saw Jorge Masvidal and Amanda Nunes record massive wins by knockout), the two men nearly came to blows.
When asked if he knew what was said, White replied, “I’m sure a lot of bad things were said. I’m not sure exactly… I’m sure it wasn’t good.
On Saturday, Nate fought his last fight on his UFC contract, beating Tony Ferguson in the main event of UFC 279 before stepping away to start his own promotion.
He was supposed to face Khamzat Chimaev, but the Russian failed to gain weight, reaching an astonishing 7.5lbs, which gave Diaz another opportunity to shoot Khabib.
“Tony has been around a long time, we should have fought a long time ago,” Diaz said before the event before discussing the UFC’s many failed attempts to make Ferguson against Khabib.
“Khabib’s ab****a** was scared of him just like that b****a**motherf***** was scared of me yesterday,” he added of Chimaev.
“We hit his b****a** in the back here and now he’s not making weight.
“You already know what it is. The real G’s are from California, America, holy shit *****.
And after beating Ferguson, White, who became his former boss, summed it up by saying, “No matter what Nate does from now on, it’s his house.”
