Della Maddalena, who will be called Jack Della in the Octagon, will be the underdog when he takes on Brazilian veteran Warlley Alves, who defeated Colby Covington in 2015.
The Perth local is on a 10-game winning streak and caught the eye of UFC President Dana White with a catchy win over Ange Loosa in the White’s Contender Series in September.
Della Maddalena’s performance was enough for White to give her her first UFC fight. The Australian will travel to the United States on Friday to finalize his preparation for what will be the biggest fight of his career to date.
“I’m super excited,” said Della Maddalena news.com.au.
“In the end, it’s just another fight, but it’s obviously the biggest fight of my career.
“The next fight is always kind of the big fight. I am super excited. I think it’s going to be a pretty amazing atmosphere. I expect to put on a good performance and have a good evening.
The 25-year-old said he had studied Alves’ previous fights but wouldn’t go into a prepared strategy, preferring to stick to his weapons and what worked for him before.
“I watched a lot of his fights,” Della Maddalena said.
“Luckily he has a lot of footage there so we definitely watched it just to get a feel for what we can expect on fight night.
“But you never know what someone will bring. Personally, I don’t really like getting caught up in game plans. I like to get a feel for what he’s going to do, his kind of fighting style, and then stick with what we normally do and try to implement what we want to do in the fight.
“I will definitely try to stand and fight with him. He’s pretty aggressive, he has good kicks, so I expect him to come towards me with a few kicks, a whole range of punches.
“He’s kind of like a kill or be killed fighter. My plan is definitely to meet him in the middle and try to give him some hard knocks and try to sideline him.
Della Maddalena enters the UFC with the welterweight division at an interesting position. In recent years he has been dominated by current champion Kamaru Usman, with Covington representing his only serious challenger to the title belt.
Della Maddalena’s immediate goal is to win every fight he takes and move up the standings, but he believes there is potentially an opening in the welterweight division for fighters to come to look good. impression.
“My plan is definitely now that I’m here, I really want to climb up these rankings, get to the top,” he said.
“That’s the long-term goal. The short term goal is definitely to keep getting those wins, fight after fight. Backing them up with good performance, finishes and just a slowdown in those rankings. “
His dream is to one day fight Usman, who is ranked # 1 among fighters pound for pound in the UFC rankings and considered by Della Maddalena to be “the welterweight GOAT.”
“I think right now the welterweight division is at a point where it’s about to open up. Usman has clearly been dominating for quite some time, ”said Della Maddalena.
“He’s probably near the end of his run, I think – whether it’s retirement or sometimes you just get cut off at the top.
“I think it’s a good time for the welterweight division. There are a lot of young talents coming, new fighters.
“A lot of people have called Usman the welterweight GOAT, which is kind of cool to think that there is a possibility that I could fight the welterweight GOAT someday. It would probably be one of the dream games, to fight the welterweight. welterweight goat.
“Hopefully he stays for a bit and it works that way, but if not, I think the welterweight division is about to open up with a lot of young talent coming in.
“Obviously it’s a long way to the top, but of course my goal is to eliminate the highest ranked person possible at any time. I understand it will be a slow process, but I will definitely try to get to this top as quickly as possible.
“Hopefully Usman will be there for the next two to three years and we can meet, but we’ll see what happens.”
Della Maddalena said he was inspired by Australian UFC champions Alex Volkanovski and Robert Whittaker, but intends to forge his own path in the sport.
“Obviously these guys are legends – the best Aussie fighters to do it,” he said.
“These guys leading the way only reinforce the idea that it’s 100% possible. No matter where you come from, who you are, you can reach the top. It is simply hard work.
“I’m definitely inspired by these guys. They paved the way for many Australian fighters. I really want to try to consolidate my own path.
