UFC Performance Based Fighters Rankings: Lightweight: January 7/22

There is constant debate over the “official” rankings of UFC fighters, which are based on the vote of a panel of journalists. This is the case with something as subjective as voting – it’s totally based on the opinion of a voter, and biases are sure to creep in, whether intentional or not. So, in an attempt to give rankings a new twist, objective and data-driven, The MMA Manifesto has come up with a performance-based ranking system that is solely based on a fighter’s performance in the cage. Next : The UFC lightweight ranking.

* conditions: 1) any fighter currently suspended or 2) inactive for at least 12 months (without a scheduled future fight) are excluded from the ranking

  • Score based on a fighter’s last 10 UFC performances (we use a five-year time limit, so if they’ve fought less than 10 times in the past five years, only fights in that period are counted)
  • Points based on opponent’s UFC win / loss record (i.e. strength of schedule – the more successes a defeated opponent has, the more points awarded), additional points given for finishes, additional points given for victories in battle for the title.
  • Points are weighed so that the most recent fights are worth more (i.e. the most recent fight counts the most, the 10th most recent fight the least)
  • No points awarded for loss
