UFC’s biggest upset bets in 2021

The 2021 UFC schedule is over and is now starting a nearly month-long hiatus with their next event slated for January 15.

Now that their year of events is over, let’s take a look at some of the biggest upheavals that have happened this year. After all, everyone loves a good outsider story.

Julianna Pena +700 vs. Amanda Nunes

The last pay-per-view event of the year, UFC 269, proved to be very important. The card featured two title fights, and the underdog in each came away victorious.

No one gave Julianna Pena a chance against Amanda Nunes, who everyone believed to be the GOAT of female mixed martial arts. Indeed, anything can happen in the world of sport and that is what was proven that night. Pena sank into a bare back choke in the second round and shocked the world by doing so.

According to Tapology.com, this is the fourth biggest upheaval in UFC history and the second biggest upheaval in UFC women’s history.

Gerald Meerschaert +440 against Makhmud Muradov

There is a belief among UFC punters that you should generally not bet against fighters from the former Soviet Union, especially when they are defined as top favorites.

Gerald Meerschaert shattered this mistake in UFC on ESPN: Barboza vs. Chikadze on August 28 of this year when he upset the Uzbekistan fighter as a +440 underdog (bet $ 100 to win $ 440). Much like Pena against Nunes, Meerschaert blocked a choke at the back in the second round to secure his victory.

Meerschaert finished 3-0 in calendar year 2021, which is huge for a fighter who was only 2-5 in his last seven fights at the start of the year.

Anthony Hernandez +375 against Rodolfo Viera

Anthony Hernandez was 1-2 (1 NC) in his last four fights entering a preliminary fight against Rodolfo Vieira at UFC 258 in February. No one was giving him a chance against the undefeated 7-0 fighter, who looked unstoppable in his first two fights in the UFC.

Hernandez ended up finishing the submission artist with his own submission, locking in a naked rear choke in round 2 to cash as an underdog of +375 (bet $ 100 to win $ 375).

Side note: The top three underdogs in 2021 all won via a bare rear choke in the second round. Interesting little nugget for this year’s UFC action.
