The WFI has a lot of thinking to do with regard to foreign freestyle wrestling coaching countries. The association will take an appeal on the same, after the Nationals in November, where the opinions of the wrestlers will be taken into consideration before making any decision.
The WFI has yet to make a decision on the existing foreign coaches of some of the country’s star wrestlers, and will only consider an extension for them after the domestic championship in November. Tokyo bronze medalist Bajrang Punia trains with Georgian Shako Bentinidis while Russian Kamal Malikov trains with Ravi Dahiya.
The federation will also need to take a call to find out if the national camp wrestlers need a foreign coach, a position that was last held by American Andrew Cook. In October 2019, the WFI also sacked Iranian Hossein Karimi. Since then, Jagmender Singh has been monitoring the preparations for the men’s squad.
The world championship is scheduled to start in Oslo from October 2, while the national championships will be played in Gonda, from November 29.
“We have not yet had a meeting with the wrestlers. We will also take their contributions. All the wrestlers are now focused on the world championship and after that they will rest before the national championships. that we will discuss this issue with our eminent wrestlers, ”WFI Assistant Secretary Vinod Tomar told PTI.
In addition, the association does not seem very enthusiastic about the idea of a foreign coach for the women’s team, as it has not reaped much profit. Finally, we should look at the case of Deepak Punia, whose Russian coach Murad Gaidarov was sacked after assaulting a referee during the Tokyo Games.
