Friday September 24, A championship delivered a card of 11 fights full of excitement with A: Revolution.
3 things we learned from ONE: Revolution
A new ONE Lightweight World Champion was crowned at the main event of the evening, but two more world titles were also on the line. Capitan Petchyindee Academy defeated Mehdi Zatout to retain the ONE bantamweight kickboxing world championship, and Joshua Pacio defended the ONE Strawweight World Title against Yosuke Saruta.
And there was a lot more action with Victoria lee shines brightly, Kim jae woong hitting his title at a ONE Featherweight World Championship title shot, and James yang making his debut with a TKO performance.
But after all this, what have we learned? Let’s go back to ONE: Revolution and pick three things that stood out for an exciting event.
Ok is Rae Yoon the fighter of the year?
As fall begins to set in, the contenders for the year-end list are also starting to show up. Near the top of one of the most coveted awards, Fighter of the Year, Ok Rae Yoonthe name of should appear.
The South Korean has come from virtual obscurity to become, now, the ONE lightweight world champion.
How did Yoon launch his ONE career? Only by eliminating two world champions in less than a month. He won Marat Gafurov and Eddie Alvarez on the ONE event series on TNT broadcast during prime time. This introduction got him a hit against Christian lee, which he then succeeded with a unanimous decision victory.
Who else has had a year like the South Korean? He went 3-0 with three impressive wins in the World Championship competition. He deserves to be on those shortlists as we start towards the end of the year. He deserved it, and it’s time for him to receive recognition.
“The Passion” is one of the most exciting athletes in 2021
Joshua “The Passion” Pacio is perhaps one of the most overlooked world champions in the sport of mixed martial arts. After ONE: Revolution, he can also throw his hat in the ring to be the most exciting.
The Filipino champion quickly did Yosuke Saruta’s job in their trilogy match with a first round TKO. The surprising result affirmed his status as the best strawweight in the world at the moment, and it was fortunate for any competitor to improve his full game even further.
Seventeen of his 20 professional wins have been finishes, including three of his last four ONE Strawweight World Championship bouts. The impressive CV he’s building is worth noting.
The Lakay team built their reputation, and now Pacio is leading his new era as the king of the straw weights. Fans should start circling every game of the young Filipino, as it’s almost guaranteed it will be pure fireworks inside the ONE Circle. After another stunning finish, Pacio is poised to create an important legacy in the sport.
Arjan Bhullar has dangerous contenders waiting
There were two heavyweight clashes at ONE: Revolution, and the results of each showed that Arjan Bhullar, A world heavyweight champion, has contenders waiting for their shot.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu King Marcus Almeida made his highly anticipated debut on the lead card, and he finished in the first round. Almeida took down Anderson Silva and subjected him with a north-south choke. It was exactly the kind of debut he was hoping for, and it was a performance that will put Bhullar on his guard.
On the main map, Russian Anatoly Malykhine does a quick job of outspoken Iranian Amir Aliakbari. Malykhin’s heavy hands quickly sidelined him with a first round knockout.
Each man poses a unique problem for the current champion, and the victories have shown that both can compete at the highest level. The heavyweight talent pool has deepened over the past year, and although Bhullar has taken over from Brandon Vera, he now faces a growing roster of contenders led by Malykhin and Almeida.
