CHENNAI: Unlike in the past, the wrestlers will train at the IG Stadium in New Delhi instead of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, ahead of the World Championships scheduled in Oslo, Norway, October 2-10. The male wrestlers (freestyle and Greco-Roman), however, will camp at the SAI center in Sonepat as usual.

The wrestlers, who were selected for the event in the selection rounds held on August 31, along with their coaches and other support staff were invited to attend at their respective venues on September 20. Interestingly, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has yet to clear the names of training partners.

“Due to the lack of time, the federation has decided to organize the women’s camp at the IG stadium instead of the SAI center in Lucknow. The world championships start on October 2, so the wrestlers will have about 10 days to train before to start in batches, “a WFI source said. say this daily.

India will be without famous faces such as Bajrang Punia, Ravi Dahiya and Vinesh Phogat in the championships. While the first two did not take part in practice, injured Vinesh lost her second fight to exclude herself. Meanwhile, Bajrang’s wife Sangeeta Phogat made a successful return to the national fold after three years by winning the 62kg final. “The training has been good so far. It’s good that she has time at camp before going to the event,” Bajrang said of his wife’s preparations for the event.
Meanwhile, many of the youngsters, who did well at the World Junior Championships last month, have reached the national team by winning finals in their respective weight classes.

The Worlds will be the first major international event for wrestlers after the Tokyo Olympics. Indian wrestlers had won two medals – Ravi’s silver and Bajrang’s bronze – at the Games.

Anshu takes exams
Anshu Malik, who represented India in the 57kg at the Games, may not join the camp on September 20. His father Dharamvir Malik said grappler Haryana is taking the final BA exams, which could delay his membership. “There are still some papers. We may ask the WFI to let her take exams before joining the camp but she will compete at the Worlds,” said the father.

No testing
As only one wrestler was present in four weight categories each (63kg & 82kg in GR, 92kg in freestyle and 76kg in women’s wrestling) at the selection events, the WFI decided to organize events in these divisions during the camp. However, the trials will not take place. Instead, the wrestlers who were present at the time of the trials will be part of the national team for the world championships. “We don’t have time to conduct trials now. Everyone who was at the trials has been named to the team,” the source signed.
