Dee Lockett, a wrestler from Stillwater High School, Oklahoma, was named the winner of the 2022 USA Today High School Sports Awards Boys Rising Star Award on the July 31 digital broadcast.

The USA Today High School Sports Awards are the nation’s largest high school sports recognition program. More than 800 athletes were honored and winners from 29 sports and other special prizes were announced during the live broadcast, which was hosted by former NFL tight ends Rob Gronkowski and Vernon Davis.

Months before his first high school wrestling match, Lockett picked up a pair of wins at the U15 Nationals. He beat his opponents 51-8 in the Freestyle tournament and was named top wrestler, walking away with a pair of national titles.

Lockett used that momentum for his first high school experience – winning the prestigious Ironman tournament in Ohio. He capped off his stellar first season by winning the 6A State Championship from Oklahoma at 145 pounds, beating a junior and a senior on the way to the final. He will enter an expected second season with a top-10 national ranking at 152 pounds by FloSports.

A total of 51 boys were named to the All-USA Today High School Sports Awards Boys Rising Stars team, including one athlete from each state.

Lockett edged out the other finalists: Bryce Underwood, a football player from Belleville High School (Michigan); And Cameron Boozer, a male basketball player from Columbus High School in Miami, Florida.
